Luis Castillo-Briceño is currently the Conducting Fellow of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) for the season 2023/2024 mentored by its Principal Conductor, Edward Gardner. He will make his UK debut conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra in November 2023 at the Brighton Dome and will perform several other concerts with the LPO during his tenure with the orchestra.
Named by the BBC Music Magazine as a "Rising Star", Luis has been an Equilibrium Young Artist since the season 20/21, mentored by conductor and singer Barbara Hannigan. He has acted as her assistant with orchestras such as: London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), Münchner Philharmoniker, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, etc. Future engagements as assistant conductor include the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (DR), the Cleveland Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, etc. As guest conductor, Luis has appeared with orchestras such as the Athens Philharmonia Orchestra and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Heredia (Costa Rica).
Costarican-born conductor Luis Castillo-Briceño served as the artistic director and chief conductor of the Junges Kammerorchester Zürich from 2019-2021. Among the orchestras that he has worked with are: Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Kammerorchester Basel, Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, MÁV Symphony Orchestra, Romanian Chamber Orchestra, Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, Argovia Philharmonia Orchestra, etc. In masterclasses he has been able to work with conductors such as Cristian Măcelaru, Marin Alsop, Nicolas Pasquet, Jorma Panula, and others.
He started his musical studies at the age of five with the violin, at the National Conservatory of Music of Costa Rica. At age eleven, Luis started to study flute at the same institution, becoming the principal flutist of the Orquesta Sinfonica Infantil de Costa Rica. Finally, Luis holds a bachelor’s degree in piano from the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (Zürich, Switzerland), where he studied with renowned Prof. Eckart Heiligers.
He has been studying conducting under the guidance of Prof. Mark Stringer and Prof. Sian Edwards, as well as Opera Coaching with Prof. Andreas Henning at the Universtität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. Parallelly, he is also studying Organ at the Konservatorium für Kirchenmusik St. Pölten with Prof. Michael Kitzinger. Luis is currently pursuing a Specialized Masters in orchestral conducting at the ZHdK (Zurich) with Prof. Christoph-Mathias Mueller and Prof. Johannes Schlaefli.
